Rocky Fielding is hoping the extra hours in the gym will pay off when he takes on Sheffield’s Wayne Reed in Liverpool on Saturday night.
The Scouser will make the first defence of his English super-middleweight title at the Echo Arena in front of a huge, patriotic crowd.
And Fielding’s many followers can expect to see a new, improved fighter with the 25-year-old spending much of 2013 working on his conditioning.
“I’d never picked a weight up in my life until now,” he told Sky Sports. “But now I’m English champion I’ve got to do things that get me through 10 and 12 round fights.
“I’ve got the power but I’ve got to get that ‘man-strength’ where I can throw them off and can knock them out rather than watch them go down and get back up again.
“I’ve been working on my strength for three months now, different conditioning every day including yoga, and we’ve got the rest of the year to build on what we’ve started.
“I’ve got muscle coming through now around my shoulders and you can see my abs and that’s going to give me a lot of confidence going into the ring. I’ll be thinking I can walk through opponents now.
“I may be a 12st still but you’ll see a different body shape now.”
The former Prizefighter champion faces the biggest test of his fledgling career in Reed, who has been in with British champions such as Kevin Anderson and Robin Reid.
“He’s a good lad, been in with some decent names,” he added. “I’ve got to do a good job on him, get my name out there and step up the ladder. He’s a good opponent at this time and he likes to come and have a go.
“Prizefighter showed what I can do when they come it me and Wayne is a similar fighter. But if he steps back that’s fine because I can fight on the front foot as well.
“I just hope I put in a good performance and everything goes well. It’s a new chapter. I’m prepared for him to come at me but I know I’m the better boxer and I’ve just got to prove that on Saturday night.
“If you take Prizefighter out of it I’ve only had nine fights. I got the English title a fight earlier than expected so I’ll just keep defending that and see what happens.”
